Apparently Esau’s two Hittite wives were a “source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah”, according to Genesis 26:35, 27:46, and 28:8. Somehow, he didn’t figure this out until Isaac sent Jacob away to find a wife from their extended family. This revelation sparked the brilliant idea of marrying the daughter of Ishmael, his father’s half-brother, perhaps in an effort to win some sort of favor with his parents.
