So a brief word of explanation for those who might not be familiar with the story in Genesis 25 already: Esau means “hairy”, and he was also called Edom which means “red”. Both names describe him at birth. Jacob means “he grasps the heel” and apparently he was clinging to his brother’s ankle as they were birthed. This act, along with the prenatal jostling, foreshadow their aggressive sibling rivalry and the subsequent national hostility displayed between each ones’ descendants (the Edomites and the Israelites respectively).
