Apparently, Nimrod was a “great warrior” and a “mighty hunter before the Lord”, according to Genesis 10:8-9. So much so that it became a catch phrase or a cliche` to refer to someone as a “Nimrod” when they excelled at hunting or fighting.

Of course there might not have been much competition for those titles, since this is the first time either occupation has been mentioned in the Bible. It would seem that being a violent, blood-thirsty warlord would not necessarily be a desirable reputation. But who am I to say? It’s not like he’s running for office or anything…
